Over 200,000 early childhood educators work across Australia, and one day each September is set aside to say thank you. Whether you're a parent, a centre director or an educator yourself, here's the date, the theme and some ideas worth stealing.
This year Early Childhood Educators' Day is on Wednesday 2 September. It's held on the first Wednesday of September every year.
| Year | Date |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Wednesday 2 September |
| 2027 | Wednesday 1 September |
| 2028 | Wednesday 6 September |
| 2029 | Wednesday 5 September |
| 2030 | Wednesday 4 September |
This year's theme is The Future Starts With Us. It points at the part educators play in shaping where children end up, and the collective weight of the sector rather than any one service.
If you're planning something, the theme gives you a hook beyond a tray of food. Ask educators to write down one thing they hope for the children in their room. Build a display around it. Or use it as the line on the poster.
Past themes for reference:
It's a national day recognising the work early childhood educators do with children in their first five years. Long day care, family day care, kindergarten and preschool are all included.
The day started in 2011 in Brisbane, set up by the Queensland arm of the Australian Childcare Alliance. It's now marked in services across the country, and it's an initiative of the Australian Childcare Alliance nationally.
September works because it sits before the end-of-year rush, which gives services time to plan something rather than squeezing it in.
Pick one thing and do it properly. The celebrations that land are the ones educators actually get to enjoy, which means someone else covers the room while they do.
One thing worth sorting early: cover. An appreciation morning tea that educators can't leave the floor to attend isn't much of a thank you.
Educators consistently say the handmade cards from children are what they keep. If you're a parent wondering whether it's worth the effort, it is.
The rule most families land on is something shareable, since educators work in teams and nobody wants to be the one who got a gift while their room partner didn't.
