When is Wear It Purple Day?

If organising Wear It Purple Day has landed on your desk, this is the short version. The date, what to run, what to order, and when you need to have it booked by.

When is Wear It Purple Day 2026?

Wear It Purple Day 2026 is on Friday 28 August. It falls on the last Friday of August every year.

Worth knowing before you plan: a Friday in late August is a common half-day or work-from-home day in a lot of offices. Plenty of workplaces run theirs on the Wednesday or Thursday so more people are actually in the building.

What to run

Pick one thing and do it properly. The events that work are the ones people turn up to.

  • A morning tea, with the food somewhere people already walk past
  • Everyone wears purple and you take one team photo
  • A wall where people write what this year's theme means to them
  • A best-dressed vote with a small prize
  • A short video or a guest speaker if you've got budget for one
  • Treats posted to home addresses if your team is spread out, done over a call

Two things worth sorting early. Check with your LGBTQIA+ staff whether they want a hand in running it, because some will want to be involved and some would rather it happen around them. And get sign-off before you promote anything, particularly if you're using the Wear It Purple branding.

What to order

Work on one item per person plus a handful spare. People take a second one, and someone always brings a visitor.

Mini Wear It Purple cupcakes in a bulk pack for a large office morning tea

Mini Wear It Purple Cupcakes are the best value if you're covering a big floor. Bite-sized, so a box goes further and everyone gets one. Melbourne delivery only.

Wear It Purple Cupcakes are what most offices order. Full-size, topped with edible designs and purple buttercream, in packs that run from a team of ten upwards.

Wear It Purple Donuts get spotted from across the room, which helps if you need people to notice something is happening. Melbourne delivery only.

Iced sugar cookies with Wear It Purple and Colours of Courage designs

Wear It Purple Cookies keep for weeks, so they're the safe pick if your date might move. They need 48 hours notice.

Add Vegan Wear It Purple Cupcakes to the order if anyone on the team is vegan. There's a loaded brownie too if you want something for one person, like a thank you for whoever helped you pull it together.

Putting your logo on it

If you want the day to read as something the organisation did, Personalised Wear It Purple Cupcakes and Personalised Colours of Courage Cupcakes take up to three logos, images or messages, printed on edible icing and mixed through the box.

Upload your file at checkout. Check the crop before you submit, because we print exactly what's supplied. Avoid artwork on a mostly black background, since the edible ink smudges on it.

Ordering and delivery

Same-day delivery across Melbourne if you order by 1PM. Next-day to Sydney and the rest of Australia, and at checkout you can select the option to have it arrive by Friday 28 August.

If your morning tea starts at a set time, book delivery for the Thursday. Our products store well overnight. Check product pages for specific storage instructions.

Morning delivery between 8am and 12pm is available in selected Melbourne metro suburbs for an extra cost, which is worth it if your event is before lunch and you don't want to be watching the door.

Ordering for more than one office? Use the Send to Multiple Recipients option on the product page or in your cart and put in as many addresses as you need on one order. For bigger runs or deliveries landing in different states on the same morning, get in touch and we'll work it out with you.

August books out well before the day, so get your order in earlier than feels necessary.

This year's theme: Colours of Courage

The 2026 campaign is Colours of Courage, about the courage it takes to be yourself and the courage of the people who back you.

Useful for you because it gives the day a hook beyond "wear purple". Ask people to share a moment that took courage, build the photo wall around it, or use it as the line on the poster.

Wear It Purple publish free posters, activity ideas and workplace toolkits on their site, and you can register your event with them. Start there before you make anything yourself.

Background, if you get asked

Wear It Purple Day started in 2010, founded by two Australian high school students after several LGBTQIA+ young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment. It's now marked in thousands of schools and workplaces.

Research from Minus18 found two in three LGBTQIA+ young people in Australia experience bullying or discrimination. A staffroom in purple doesn't fix that. It does tell someone they're not the only one in the building.

On the colour: purple and lavender have been tied to LGBTQ+ identity since the Lavender Scare in 1950s America, when the term was used to single people out and the community took it back. Co-founder Katherine Hudson chose it because it isn't owned by any one movement.
